Calcutta Chamber of Commerce Hosts Special Session on Japan-India Relations

Kolkata, – The Calcutta Chamber of Commerce successfully hosted a special session on “Overview of Japan-India Relationship and Furthering Economic & Business Relationship between Japan and India.” The event was graced by Mr. NAKAGAWA Koichi, Hon’ble Consul General of Japan in Kolkata, alongside key dignitaries from the Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Hari Shankar Halwasiya, President of the Calcutta Chamber of Commerce, warmly welcomed all attendees and provided insights into the strong economic, political, and cultural ties between India and Japan. The event was part of the activities under Japan Month, declared by the Embassy of Japan in India, to promote bilateral ties in trade, investment, and cultural exchanges.

During the session, Mr. NAKAGAWA Koichi, Hon’ble Consul General of Japan in Kolkata, underscored the vibrant India-Japan relationship, built on mutual trust and cooperation, with a focus on enhancing economic, cultural, and people-to-people ties. He expressed Japan’s enthusiasm for the growing investment and presence of Japanese companies in India, noting that their economic partnership is built on a strong foundation, with a commitment to multidimensional collaboration. As India strives to become a $5 trillion economy by 2025, Mr. Koichi reaffirmed Japan’s dedication to economic cooperation and its role as a steadfast partner. Furthermore, Japan is actively promoting private investment and supporting connectivity, embracing innovative ideas and initiatives to develop critical infrastructure and foster regional connections.

The session provided a platform for insightful discussions on the evolving trade relations between the two countries, with a particular focus on joint ventures in key sectors such as infrastructure, automobiles, and technology. Notably, Japan is India’s fifth-largest investor, with a cumulative Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of $41.91 billion from April 2000 to March 2024.

The event highlighted the contributions of Japanese companies like Sony, Toyota, Honda, and Mitsubishi in India, and Indian firms such as Infosys, TCS, and Sun Pharma making a significant presence in Japan. Both countries are working closely to enhance their infrastructural synergies, supported by Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA), which has been instrumental in projects like the Delhi Metro and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Anurag Jhunjhunwala, Vice President of the Chamber, who expressed appreciation for the Consul General’s presence and insights.
