“No country today can afford not to have good relations with India” – said H. E. Mr. Reuben Gauci, High Commissioner of the Republic of Malta in India

Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce & Industry organised a Special Session with H.E. Mr. Reuben Gauci, High Commissioner of the Republic of Malta in India on “Doing Business with Malta” here today at the Chamber. Mr. Ashoke Jhunjhunwala, Honorary Consul, The Consulate of Malta in Kolkata also addressed the Session.

While highlighting sectors such as automobile, pharma, biotechnology, banking & finance, chemicals, food processing, IT & BPM, oil and natural gas and renewable energy, Mr. Namit Bajoria, Immediate Past President, MCCI said that they promises to create new avenues for economic growth and prosperity. Both countries can collaborate in IT and digital innovation, leveraging Malta’s strengths in blockchain technology and India’s prowess in software development and digital services.

While giving the theme address Mr. Arun Kumar Garodia, Chairman, Council on Foreign Trade, MCCI emphasized more on the role of a state in facilitating bilateral ties and taking it to its optimum level. He viewed that West Bengal is now all set to play a lead role in facilitating bilateral economic and commercial relation with Malta.

H. E. Mr. Reuben Gauci , High Commissioner of the Republic of Malta in India in his address said that no country today can afford not to have good relations with India. He wished to have more malties investment in India. He informed that 112 Indian companies are currently operating in Malta. To promote investment in Malta, the Government of Malta has established “Malta Enterprise”.

Malta is also a gateway to North Africa also. So Malta can be a stepping stone for investing in Libia, Tunisia, Egypt or any other African countries. Film production is another important area as Malta has become a hub for international film projects.

The envoy highlighted that Financial services are one of the pillars of the Maltese economy. “Now, our focus is on diversification of trade” – said Mr. Gauci. Malta is keen on having Indian companies manufacturing semi-conductors and microchips in EU soil.

While speaking on the economy of Malta, he pointed out that Malta is one of the most expanding economy in EU having GDP of 18.9 billion Euro and it is expected to reach 23 billion Euro in the coming years.

Mr. Ashoke Jhunjhunwala, Hony. Consul of Malta in Kolkata in his address said that there is tremendous scope for growth in bilateral trade relation between India and Malta. Malta has huge opportunities in trade and tourism. Malta is well connected with North America also.

The session ended with a hearty Vote of thanks proposed by Mr. Yogesh Gupta, Co-Chairman, Council on Foreign Trade, MCCI.
