31st August 2022, Kolkata: A renovated Sealdah Railway Magistrate’s Court was formally inaugurated by Hon’ble Justice Prakash Srivastava, Chief Justice, High Court, Kolkata on 30 August 2022 (Monday) virtually through video Conference from the Calcutta High Court. Hon’ble Justice T S Sivagnanam, Calcutta High Court, Hon’ble Justice Subrata Talukdar, Calcutta High Court, Hon’ble Justice, Aniruddha Roy, Calcutta High Court and Sri Arun Arora, General Manager Eastern Railway were present.
Sri S P Singh, Divisional Railway Manager, Eastern Railway – Sealdah Division, Sri Jayanta Koley, District Judge, South 24 Parganas and Sri Parijat Chakraborty, Judicial Magistrate, Sealdah, Shri S S Priyadarshi, ADRM Sealdah along with other dignitaries were also present. This is part of an ongoing initiative to improve Railway infrastructure in order to increase functional efficiency, passenger comfort and aesthetic appeal as well.
This much-needed modern ergonomically-designed premise, equipped with the latest office equipment, would go a long way to improve the efficiency and streamline operations by providing a conducive working ambiance for finalization of court Cases .The detention centre within the premises has also got a modern facelift.
The Sealdah Division of Eastern Railway is one of the busiest divisions of Indian Railway catering primarily to the city’s suburban traffic of North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Nadia and Murshidabad districts of West Bengal. The Sealdah Railway Station has a daily footfall of 1.2 million approx.
Recently, the Sealdah Metro Station has also become operational with the commencement of Sealdah-Phoolbagan Metro Station which would add to the daily footfalls. The Sealdah Railway Station has three terminals – Sealdah (North), Sealdah (main) and Sealdah (South) together comprising 21 platforms.
All cases related to offences committed in Railway premises registered by Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police under RP(UP) Act are dealt with by the Judicial Railway Magistrate, Sealdah. There are two Judicial Railway Magistrate Court in Sealdah Division. One at Sealdah Railway Station and other at Ranaghat Railway Station. The Railway Magistrate Court Sealdah also deals with the case of Metro Railway and Kolkata’s RPF posts of Noapara, Belgachia and Central Park.
